Rose information: Roses are particularly responsive to deadheading. Deadheading should be done by taking the stem down to the first 5-leaflet leaf, not just the base of the flower. This encourages further branching and flower production. Twentieth-century rose breeder’s generally emphasized size and colour, producing large, attractive blooms with little or no scent. Many wild and old-fashioned roses, by contrast, have a strong sweet scent.
